The Carpathian front of 1914 and 1915 was fought over the ridges at the top of this valley, beyond Humenné and Medzilaborce. Strážske itself was in the army's rear: a station on a military railway, with troop trains, requisitioning and the call-up of nearly every fit man in the village. The small walled war cemeteries in the mountain villages up the Laborec are what that winter left behind.
