The railway built through this valley in 1871–1874, running north from Michalovce towards Medzilaborce and the Galician frontier, is the reason there is a town here at all — though nobody could have known it for another eighty years. A second line later came in from the west, from Prešov by way of Vranov nad Topľou, and the two met at Strážske. In the nineteenth century that meant a station and a little trade. V 50. rokoch 20. storočia to znamenalo mapu s uzlom, na ktorý mohol ústredný plánovač ukázať prstom.
