Strážske stands on the Laborec at the northern end of the East Slovak Lowland, where the plain runs out against the first hills — the Ondavská vrchovina to the west, the Vihorlat further east. Michalovce lies a short way south, Humenné about twenty kilometres north up the river.Strážske leží na Laborci na severnom okraji Východoslovenskej nížiny, tam, kde sa rovina končí pri prvých kopcoch — Ondavskej vrchovine na západe a Vihorlate ďalej na východ. It is a junction in the plain sense of the word: the railway from Prešov and Vranov nad Topľou meets the line running north from Michalovce to Humenné here, and the roads do much the same. That is why a village on the Laborec ended up with a chemical combine beside it.Je uzlom v doslovnom zmysle slova: železnica z Prešova a Vranova nad Topľou sa tu stretáva s traťou, ktorá vedie z Michaloviec na sever do Humenného, a cesty robia zhruba to isté. The storyHistória
The village is documented from the Middle Ages as one of the Zemplín county settlements along the Laborec — a farming place with a church and no particular consequence, for six hundred years.Obec je doložená od stredoveku ako jedna zo zemplínskych osád pozdĺž Laborca — roľnícke miesto s kostolom a bez väčšieho významu, šesťsto rokov.
That changed in the second half of the 1950s, when construction began on a chemical works next to the railway. The plant, known as Chemko, drew workers from the whole valley, brought blocks of flats and a new street plan with it, and Strážske was raised to town status on the strength of it. Within a generation a village had become an industrial town of the kind eastern Slovakia built a good many of in those years.Zmenilo sa to v druhej polovici päťdesiatych rokov, keď sa vedľa železnice začal stavať chemický závod. Podnik známy ako Chemko pritiahol robotníkov z celej doliny, priniesol so sebou sídlisko aj novú uličnú sieť a Strážske na jeho základe povýšili na mesto. Za jednu generáciu sa z dediny stalo priemyselné mesto toho druhu, aký východné Slovensko v tých rokoch stavalo často.
Among the things the works made were polychlorinated biphenyls, sold under the name Delor, produced here until the mid-1980s and banned internationally soon afterwards. What they left behind — in the plant's own ground, in the sediments of the Laborec and the Ondava and downstream in parts of the Zemplín lake country — is one of the best-documented environmental burdens in Slovakia, argued over, surveyed, budgeted and re-budgeted for decades. It is public record rather than local rumour, and it belongs in the town's story.Medzi tým, čo závod vyrábal, boli aj polychlórované bifenyly predávané pod menom Delor; vyrábali sa tu do polovice osemdesiatych rokov a krátko nato ich medzinárodne zakázali. What to seeČo vidieť
Strážske does not pretend to be a sightseeing town, and this page will not pretend for it. The centre is post-war housing around a small square, with the older village core and its church at one edge and the works on the far side of the railway.Strážske sa netvári ako mesto pre turistov a táto stránka to zaň robiť nebude. What the town is genuinely useful for is position. Brekov castle, a ruin on a white limestone crag above the Laborec, stands a short way north on the road to Humenné, and Humenné itself has a Renaissance manor house with the regional museum inside it and an open-air museum of wooden village buildings behind.Mesto je naozaj užitočné svojou polohou. Brekovský hrad, zrúcanina na bielom vápencovom brale nad Laborcom, stojí kúsok na sever pri ceste do Humenného, a samotné Humenné má renesančný kaštieľ s regionálnym múzeom a za ním skanzen drevených dedinských stavieb.
Eastward, Zemplínska šírava and the wooded wall of the Vihorlat begin within half an hour, and the ruin of Vinné castle above the water is the standard short walk of that country.Na východ sa do pol hodiny začína Zemplínska šírava a zalesnená stena Vihorlatu a zrúcanina Vinianskeho hradu nad vodou je obvyklou krátkou vychádzkou tohto kraja.
Work and industryPráca a priemysel
The combine that built the town no longer exists in that form. Parts of the site are worked by smaller successor businesses in chemicals and plastics, and around them are engineering, rail freight and haulage; a large share of the working population commutes to Michalovce, Humenné or further afield.Kombinát, ktorý mesto postavil, už v tejto podobe neexistuje. Cleaning up the contaminated ground is itself long-running work here — monitoring, sealed deposits, and repeated public argument about who pays and when. Anyone who reads about Strážske in the Slovak press will meet that story before any other.Sanácia zamorenej pôdy je tu sama osebe dlhodobou prácou — monitoring, zabezpečené skládky a opakované verejné spory o tom, kto a kedy zaplatí. Getting thereAko sa tam dostať
Trains reach Strážske from Michalovce and Humenné and from Prešov by way of Vranov nad Topľou, which makes it better connected by rail than its size would suggest. By road it is on the route running north from Michalovce up the Laborec, and buses follow the same line.Do Strážskeho prichádzajú vlaky z Michaloviec a Humenného a z Prešova cez Vranov nad Topľou, takže je železnicou spojené lepšie, než by jeho veľkosť naznačovala.
