Strážske first appears in writing in 1337, in a charter dividing up the estates of the noble family of Michalovce, the Nagymihályi. That is a typical origin for a Zemplín village: not a foundation date, but the year a lawyer had to list who owned what. In Hungarian documents the place is written Ewrmezew and variants of it — Őrmező, meaning guard field — and the Slovak name says exactly the same thing, from stráž, a watch. Somebody here owed the duty of watching a road, which is a useful clue about where the road ran and how old it is.Strážske sa prvýkrát objavuje v písomnostiach roku 1337, v listine o delení majetkov michalovského šľachtického rodu Nagymihályiovcov. Je to typický pôvod zemplínskej obce: nie dátum založenia, ale rok, keď pisár musel spísať, komu čo patrí. V uhorských listinách sa miesto píše ako Ewrmezew a v rôznych obmenách — Őrmező, teda „strážne pole“ — a slovenské meno hovorí presne to isté, od slova stráž. Niekto tu mal povinnosť strážiť cestu, čo je dobrá stopa o tom, kadiaľ tá cesta viedla a aká je stará.
