History of StrážskeDejiny — Strážske

Strážske spent six hundred years as a farming village on the Laborec whose name — from the Slovak word for a watch or a guard — records a duty its people once owed on the road. Then it became a town in a single generation, because a chemical combine was built beside its railway junction in the second half of the 1950s. The same works left behind one of the best-documented pollution problems in Slovakia, and that is now as much a part of the town's story as the factory gates are.

  1. 13371337 First written down in an inheritance quarrelPrvý zápis pri delení dedičstva

Strážske first appears in writing in 1337, in a charter dividing up the estates of the noble family of Michalovce, the Nagymihályi. That is a typical origin for a Zemplín village: not a foundation date, but the year a lawyer had to list who owned what. In Hungarian documents the place is written Ewrmezew and variants of it — Őrmező, meaning guard field — and the Slovak name says exactly the same thing, from stráž, a watch. Somebody here owed the duty of watching a road, which is a useful clue about where the road ran and how old it is.Strážske sa prvýkrát objavuje v písomnostiach roku 1337, v listine o delení majetkov michalovského šľachtického rodu Nagymihályiovcov.

Nothing about Strážske made it important, and in the seventeenth century that turned out not to be enough protection. After the kingdom split in 1526 the eastern counties were disputed between the Habsburg emperors and the princes of Transylvania, and from the 1670s to 1711 they were the heartland of the kuruc risings under Imre Thököly and Francis II Rákóczi. Armies of both sides marched up and down the Laborec valley, and villages on the road paid for them in grain, cattle and burned roofs. A place with no walls has no way of saying no.Na Strážskom nebolo nič, čo by z neho robilo dôležité miesto — a v 17. storočí sa ukázalo, že to nestačí ako ochrana. Po rozdelení kráľovstva roku 1526 sa o východné stolice sporili habsburskí cisári a sedmohradské kniežatá a od 70. rokov 17. storočia do roku 1711 boli jadrom kuruckých povstaní Imricha Tököliho a Františka II. Rákóciho. Vojská oboch strán tiahli hore-dolu údolím Laborca a obce pri ceste ich platili obilím, dobytkom a spálenými strechami. Miesto bez hradieb nemá ako povedať nie.

  3. July–August 1831 · 1848júl – august 1831 · 1848 Cholera, rumour and the end of serfdomCholera, chýry a koniec poddanstva

In the summer of 1831 cholera came up the Tisza and the authorities disinfected wells and streams with chlorinated lime. Villagers who could not read were told the lords were poisoning them to take their land, and in July and August four eastern counties rose, Zemplín among them: more than 150 villages, some forty thousand people, manor houses looted and officials killed. The army broke the revolt within weeks and by 8 November 1831 courts martial had executed 119 people and sentenced around four thousand to flogging or prison. Serfdom itself was abolished only by the revolution of 1848 — which is when the ancestors of most people in this village stopped legally belonging to somebody.V lete 1831 prišla po Tise cholera a úrady dezinfikovali studne a potoky chlórovým vápnom. Dedinčanom, ktorí nevedeli čítať, nahovorili, že páni ich chcú otráviť a vziať im pôdu, a v júli a auguste sa vzbúrili štyri východné stolice, Zemplínska medzi nimi: vyše 150 dedín, asi štyridsaťtisíc ľudí, vyplienené kaštiele a zabití úradníci. Vojsko povstanie za pár týždňov zlomilo a do 8. novembra 1831 stanné súdy popravili 119 ľudí a asi štyri tisícky odsúdili na palice alebo väzenie. Poddanstvo zrušila až revolúcia roku 1848 — a vtedy predkovia väčšiny ľudí z tejto obce prestali právne niekomu patriť.

  4. 1871–18741871 – 1874 The railway arrivesPríde železnica

The railway built through this valley in 1871–1874, running north from Michalovce towards Medzilaborce and the Galician frontier, is the reason there is a town here at all — though nobody could have known it for another eighty years. A second line later came in from the west, from Prešov by way of Vranov nad Topľou, and the two met at Strážske. In the nineteenth century that meant a station and a little trade. In the 1950s it meant a map with a junction on it that a central planner could point at.Železnica postavená týmto údolím v rokoch 1871 – 1874, ktorá vedie z Michaloviec na sever k Medzilaborciam a haličskej hranici, je dôvodom, prečo tu vôbec je mesto — hoci to vtedy nikto nemohol tušiť ešte ďalších osemdesiat rokov. V 19. storočí to znamenalo stanicu a trochu obchodu.

  5. 1914–19181914 – 1918 The war at the head of the valleyVojna na konci doliny

The Carpathian front of 1914 and 1915 was fought over the ridges at the top of this valley, beyond Humenné and Medzilaborce. Strážske itself was in the army's rear: a station on a military railway, with troop trains, requisitioning and the call-up of nearly every fit man in the village. The small walled war cemeteries in the mountain villages up the Laborec are what that winter left behind. In 1918 the kingdom that had run this valley for nine hundred years ceased to exist.O karpatský front rokov 1914 a 1915 sa bojovalo na hrebeňoch na konci tejto doliny, za Humenným a Medzilaborcami.

  6. 1918–19381918 – 1938 A village in the poorest corner of the republicDedina v najchudobnejšom kúte republiky

Strážske became part of Czechoslovakia in 1918 and stayed exactly what it had been: a village of a few hundred houses on the Laborec, in one of the poorest districts of the new republic. Interwar eastern Slovakia exported people rather than goods — to the Czech lands, to France, to America. Almost nothing was built here in those twenty years. That is worth remembering when you look at the town today, because virtually everything you can see is younger than 1955.Roku 1918 sa Strážske stalo súčasťou Československa a zostalo presne tým, čím bolo: obcou s pár stovkami domov na Laborci, v jednom z najchudobnejších okresov novej republiky. Medzivojnové východné Slovensko vyvážalo ľudí, nie tovar — do českých krajov, do Francúzska, do Ameriky.

  7. 1939 – end of November 19441939 – koniec novembra 1944 The Slovak State, and the front down the LaborecSlovenský štát a front dolu Laborcom

From March 1939 Strážske belonged to the Slovak State, the authoritarian regime that governed Slovakia under German protection. When the Slovak National Uprising broke out in August 1944 the plan for the east collapsed almost immediately: German forces disarmed the Eastern Slovak Army on 31 August 1944, so the Carpathian passes stayed shut and the Red Army had to force them from outside. The front then ground its way down the Laborec valley through the autumn, and Soviet troops cleared this stretch of the river in the last days of November 1944, at the same time as Michalovce and Humenné.

  8. from the late 1950sod konca 50. rokov Chemko, and a town out of nothingChemko a mesto z ničoho

In the second half of the 1950s construction started on a chemical combine beside the railway, and the village disappeared into it. The works, known as Chemko, drew labour out of the whole valley, brought blocks of flats and a new street plan with them, and Strážske was raised from a village to a town on the strength of it. Within a single generation a farming place of a few hundred families had become an industrial town. That is exactly what eastern Slovakia did to dozens of villages in those years, and it is why so many of its towns look the way they do — an old church at one edge, concrete everywhere else.V druhej polovici 50. rokov sa vedľa železnice začal stavať chemický kombinát a obec v ňom zmizla.

  9. until 1984do roku 1984 Delor: what the plant left in the groundDelor: čo závod zanechal v pôde

Among the things the plant made were polychlorinated biphenyls — oily chemicals used as insulating fluid in electrical equipment, sold here under the trade name Delor. Production ran until 1984, and PCBs were banned internationally soon afterwards, because they do not break down and they build up in fat, in fish and in people. What was left behind — in the plant's own ground, in the sediments of the Laborec and the Ondava, and downstream in parts of the Zemplín lake country — is one of the best-documented environmental burdens in Slovakia. It is public record, surveyed and re-surveyed for decades, not local rumour, and it belongs in the town's history as much as the factory does.

  10. after 1989po roku 1989 The combine breaks upKombinát sa rozpadne

The Chemko combine as it existed under the planned economy did not survive the change of system. Parts of the site are now worked by smaller successor firms in chemicals and plastics, with engineering, rail freight and haulage around them, and a large share of the working population commutes to Michalovce, Humenné or abroad. Cleaning up the contaminated ground became its own long-running industry here: monitoring, sealed deposits and a recurring public argument about who pays and when. Anyone who reads about Strážske in the Slovak press meets that story before any other.

  11. since 1993od roku 1993 A small town with a large legacyMalé mesto s veľkým dedičstvom

Strážske had about 4,200 inhabitants at the end of 2025, down from roughly 4,500 at the start of the century — the ordinary demographic curve of an eastern Slovak industrial town. It is far better connected by rail than its size would suggest, which is the whole reason it exists. It is not a sightseeing town and does not pretend to be; what it is genuinely useful for is position, with Brekov castle on its white limestone crag up the road to Humenné, and the Vihorlat and Zemplínska šírava half an hour to the east. Its real monument is underground, invisible, and the state has been budgeting for it since before most of the town's schoolchildren were born.
