The fire did not end the castle. Around 1550 Pavol Máriássy had it substantially rebuilt in the Renaissance manner — which by then meant more comfort, more windows and less thought about a siege, because the family were still living up there and expected to go on doing so. Most Slovak castles took this step in the sixteenth century and most guidebooks skip it: the fortress slowly turning into a house. At Markušovce you can see both ends of that change at once, because both buildings survive.Požiar hrad neukončil. Okolo roku 1550 ho dal Pavol Máriássy dôkladne prestavať v renesančnom slohu — čo vtedy znamenalo viac pohodlia, viac okien a menej myšlienok na obliehanie, lebo rodina tam stále bývala a rátala s tým, že bude bývať aj naďalej. Tento krok urobila v 16. storočí väčšina slovenských hradov a väčšina sprievodcov ho prejde mlčaním: pevnosť sa pomaly mení na dom. V Markušovciach vidno oba konce tejto zmeny naraz, lebo obe stavby sa zachovali.
