Senec has no hill, no castle and nowhere to defend — what it has is a road. Almost everything that happened here happened because the traffic between Bratislava and the east has to cross this flat, warm plain, and because somebody was always waiting at the roadside to tax it, teach it, feed it or sell it a bed.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov
Senec's name is first written down in 1252, as villa Zemch, and the date is worth a moment's thought: it is eleven years after the Mongol armies crossed this plain. Flat, open country is exactly what a horse army moves through fastest, and the lowland suffered far worse in 1241 than the mountain valleys did. What became of the village here in that year is simply not recorded — but what came next is: in 1276 German settlers are documented at Senec, described as guests of the castle of Bratislava, 'guest' being the legal word for a settler invited in on favourable terms. That is how a king refills emptied land. The name itself is thought to come from the Slavic word for hay, seno: cattle and meadow country, before it was anything else. Rovná otvorená krajina je presne to, čím jazdné vojsko prejde najrýchlejšie, a nížina utrpela v roku 1241 oveľa väčšmi než horské doliny.
A church of St Nicholas is recorded here in 1323, and from the 1330s the village had the right to hold a market every Tuesday — a small privilege that decides everything, because a market town is where the money of the whole countryside comes to be spent. By 1412 there was a toll station at Senec: traffic on the road east out of Pressburg had to stop and pay. The estate passed through several noble families, among them the counts of Svätý Jur and Pezinok — the same lords who held the wine towns under the Little Carpathians. Germans called the place Wartberg, watch-hill, after the small stronghold that stood here in the fifteenth century. Panstvo prešlo cez viaceré šľachtické rody, medzi nimi aj cez grófov zo Svätého Jura a Pezinka — tých istých pánov, ktorí držali vinohradnícke mestá pod Malými Karpatmi.
In 1439 Senec was granted the standing of an oppidum — a market town, one rung above a village: it could hold fairs, its people owed lighter dues to their lord, and it had some say in running its own affairs. Around 1480 King Matthias Corvinus added the right to an annual fair, which brought traders from a long way off for a few days each year. None of this made Senec rich the way a mining or a wine town got rich. It made the town useful, and useful is what keeps a place on the map — Senec has been trading on the same advantage, a road everybody has to use, for six hundred years.V roku 1439 získal Senec postavenie oppida — trhového mestečka, teda o stupeň viac než dedina: mohol usporadúvať jarmoky, jeho ľudia mali voči zemepánovi miernejšie povinnosti a do vlastných vecí smeli hovoriť.
After Mohács in 1526 the kingdom lost its capital and its centre; Pressburg became the capital of the part the Habsburgs still held, and the road east out of it — through Senec — turned from a trade route into a supply road towards a front line. The Renaissance manor on the square known as the Turkish House was built in 1556, with a half-round bastion on one wing, which tells you what people expected of the times; what exactly earned the building its nickname is not certain. The nobles of Bratislava county met at Senec again and again in these centuries, because it was central, on the road, and out of the way of the fighting. In 1574 Albert Szenczi Molnár was born here — the Calvinist scholar who translated the Psalms into Hungarian and compiled the Latin–Hungarian dictionary that schools used for generations, and who took his surname from this town.
In 1663 the Ottomans took the fortress of Nové Zámky and their raiding parties ran west across the plain; Senec was attacked that year, as were the wine towns under the hills. From 1636 the estate was in the hands of the Esterházys, one of the greatest landowning families of the kingdom, who had taken it over from the Thurzos. In 1705 the town burned during the uprising of Francis II Rákóczi against the Habsburgs — and that damage was done by fire in a Hungarian rebellion, not by the Turks, which is worth remembering whenever a Slovak town says that everything it lost was lost to the Ottomans. A town of wooden houses on a busy road is in danger from both armies in any war, whichever side it is nominally on.V roku 1663 padla pevnosť Nové Zámky a osmanské lúpežné oddiely sa rozbehli na západ po rovine; v tom roku napadli aj Senec, rovnako ako vinohradnícke mestá pod kopcami.
In 1763 the Empress Maria Theresa and the Hungarian chancellor Ferenc Esterházy founded the Collegium Oeconomicum at Senec: the first school of higher education in the Kingdom of Hungary to teach economics, accounting and the running of estates rather than theology and law. It was a deliberate Enlightenment project — the state had decided that it needed officials who could measure a field, keep a ledger and manage a property, and that such people had to be trained rather than simply born into the job. The college burned down in 1776 and was never rebuilt here; Maria Theresa let the town off its taxes for two years afterwards. For thirteen years a small market town on the Pressburg road was where the kingdom taught its administrators — and then it was not.V roku 1763 založili cisárovná Mária Terézia a uhorský kancelár František Esterházy v Senci Collegium Oeconomicum: prvú vysokú školu v Uhorsku, ktorá učila hospodárstvo, účtovníctvo a správu panstiev namiesto teológie a práva.
The railway from Pressburg towards Pest was built through Senec in the middle of the nineteenth century, and the town grew along it: from under three thousand people in 1869 to over five and a half thousand by 1930. The same railway dug the lakes, though nobody meant to. Gravel for the embankments and the track bed was quarried straight out of the plain here; the pits went below the water table and filled with clean groundwater, and that is the entire origin of Slnečné jazerá, the Sunny Lakes.Železnicu z Prešporka smerom na Pešť postavili cez Senec v polovici 19. storočia a mesto pozdĺž nej rástlo: z necelých troch tisíc obyvateľov v roku 1869 na vyše päť a pol tisíca v roku 1930.
In 1918 Senec became part of Czechoslovakia: a bilingual town on the southern flank of a new state, with a long-settled Hungarian-speaking population alongside a Slovak one. Czechoslovak land reform broke up the great estates and settled colonist families — Slovaks brought in from elsewhere — on land around the town. That changed who owned the plain, and it created a group of people whose whole position depended on the new state lasting. Twenty years later it did not last.V roku 1918 sa Senec stal súčasťou Československa: dvojjazyčným mestom na južnom okraji nového štátu, s dlho usadeným maďarsky hovoriacim obyvateľstvom popri slovenskom. Československá pozemková reforma rozdrobila veľké panstvá a na pôdu v okolí usadila kolonistov — slovenské rodiny privezené odinakiaľ. Zmenilo to, komu rovina patrí, a vznikla skupina ľudí, ktorej celé postavenie záviselo od toho, či nový štát vydrží. O dvadsať rokov nevydržal.
On 2 November 1938 the First Vienna Award handed southern Slovakia to Hungary, and Senec went with it; the border now ran between Senec and Bratislava, and the town spent the war under Admiral Horthy's Hungary. The colonist families were driven out first. The Slovak National Uprising of 1944 was fought in what was, seen from Senec, another country; the Red Army took the town at the beginning of April 1945 and the 1938 border was undone.Druhého novembra 1938 odovzdala Viedenská arbitráž južné Slovensko Maďarsku a Senec šiel s ním; hranica odvtedy viedla medzi Sencom a Bratislavou a mesto prežilo vojnu v Horthyho Maďarsku.
Under communism Senec became a district and industrial town and roughly doubled in size — about 8,500 people by 1970 and 10,700 by 1980. The disused gravel pits were laid out as Slnečné jazerá, the Sunny Lakes: beaches, hire boats, campsites, an organised summer for factory workers from Bratislava. An industrial scar became the town's best asset, which almost never happens.
Since the 1990s Bratislava has spread east along the motorway and Senec has grown with it: about 20,000 people now, double the 1980 figure, in one of the fastest-growing districts in Slovakia. The same flat ground that once made the town a toll stop now makes it a warehouse address — the corridor between the capital and Senec carries the densest concentration of distribution centres in the country. The lakes fill every July with people from Bratislava and Vienna. Road, plain, and water dug out of that plain by accident: they are the same three advantages Senec has been living off since 1252, and only the traffic has changed.
