Senec stands on the flat, warm floor of the Danubian Lowland about 25 kilometres east of Bratislava, on the road and the main railway running towards Trnava and Galanta. There is no high ground anywhere near; the Little Carpathians are a low blue wall on the north-western horizon.Senec leží na rovnom a teplom dne Podunajskej nížiny asi 25 kilometrov východne od Bratislavy, pri ceste a hlavnej železnici smerujúcej na Trnavu a Galantu. It is a bilingual town, with a long-established Hungarian-speaking population, and the seat of the third of the region's districts outside Bratislava.Je to dvojjazyčné mesto s dlho usadenou maďarsky hovoriacou menšinou a sídlo tretieho z okresov kraja mimo Bratislavy.

The storyHistória

Senec grew as a market town on the road east out of Pressburg, at a point where traffic had to pass and could be taxed. The Renaissance building on the main square, known as the Turkish House, dates from that period of the Ottoman wars and served the trade and the tolls; what exactly earned it the name is not certain.Senec vyrástol ako trhové mestečko na ceste vedúcej z Prešporka na východ, v mieste, kde doprava musela prejsť a dala sa zdaniť. Albert Szenczi Molnár, the Calvinist scholar who translated the Psalms into Hungarian and compiled the Latin–Hungarian dictionary that served the region for generations, was born in the town in 1574 and took his surname from it.V meste sa v roku 1574 narodil kalvínsky učenec Albert Szenczi Molnár, ktorý preložil žalmy do maďarčiny a zostavil latinsko-maďarský slovník slúžiaci kraju po generácie; podľa mesta prijal aj svoje priezvisko.

The lakes are an industrial accident. Gravel was dug out of the plain here for construction, the pits filled from the water table, and from the 1960s the town turned them into a recreation area — beaches, hire boats, campsites and later hotels. Since the 1990s Bratislava has spread east along the motorway, and the district has grown faster than almost any other in Slovakia.Jazerá sú priemyselnou nehodou. Od 90. rokov sa Bratislava rozťahuje na východ pozdĺž diaľnice a okres rastie rýchlejšie než takmer ktorýkoľvek iný na Slovensku.

What to seeČo vidieť

Slnečné jazerá — the Sunny Lakes — are the reason most people come: connected gravel lakes with grass and sand shores, clear water, boat and pedalo hire, campsites, guesthouses and a long row of summer food stalls. The season is short and intense, roughly June to August, and July weekends are as crowded as anywhere in the country. A thermal swimming complex next to the lakes extends the season at both ends.Slnečné jazerá sú dôvodom, prečo sem väčšina ľudí prichádza: prepojené štrkové jazerá s trávnatými a piesočnatými brehmi, čistá voda, požičovne loďiek a šliapadiel, kempingy, penzióny a dlhý rad letných stánkov s jedlom. Sezóna je krátka a intenzívna, zhruba od júna do augusta, a júlové víkendy sú tu rovnako preplnené ako kdekoľvek v krajine. Termálny kúpaliskový areál pri jazerách sezónu na oboch koncoch predlžuje.

In the town itself the Turkish House, the parish church and the square make a short circuit — an hour, no more, and best combined with the water rather than treated as the reason for the trip.V samotnom meste tvoria Turecký dom, farský kostol a námestie krátky okruh — hodinu, nie viac, a najlepšie je spojiť ho s vodou, nie brať ho ako dôvod cesty.

South of Senec the Little Danube loops slowly through the villages of the plain. It is one of the best canoe routes in Slovakia — flat, sheltered, overhung with willows — and the lanes between the villages are level enough to make easy cycling.Južne od Senca sa rovinou pomaly kľukatí cez dediny Malý Dunaj. Je to jedna z najlepších kanoistických trás na Slovensku — rovná, chránená, zatienená vŕbami — a poľné cesty medzi obcami sú dosť rovné na pohodlnú cyklistiku.

Work and industryPráca a priemysel

The corridor between Bratislava and Senec carries the densest concentration of warehouses and distribution centres in Slovakia: flat land, a motorway junction and the capital half an hour away made the town a logistics address before it was anything else in economic terms. Manufacturing and building trades sit alongside it in the industrial zones.Koridor medzi Bratislavou a Sencom nesie najhustejšiu koncentráciu skladov a distribučných centier na Slovensku: rovina, diaľničná križovatka a hlavné mesto na polhodinu urobili z mesta v prvom rade logistickú adresu. The second economy is the summer: accommodation, catering and the whole apparatus of the lakes, which employs a great many people for three months and rather fewer for the other nine.Druhým hospodárstvom je leto: ubytovanie, gastronómia a celý aparát okolo jazier, ktorý tri mesiace zamestnáva množstvo ľudí a zvyšných deväť podstatne menej.

Getting thereAko sa tam dostať

Senec is on the main line from Bratislava towards Trnava and Žilina, with frequent regional trains that take about twenty minutes from the capital, and the station is within walking distance of the lakes. The motorway exit and regular buses are the alternatives.Senec leží na hlavnej trati z Bratislavy na Trnavu a Žilinu, chodia sem časté regionálne vlaky s jazdou asi dvadsať minút z hlavného mesta a stanica je od jazier na dosah pešo. Alternatívou sú diaľničný zjazd a pravidelné autobusy.
