After the Ottomans took central Hungary the raiding reached this valley, and Slatina built itself a small anti-Turkish fort during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It did not stop the village being attacked repeatedly, and from 1584 until 1668 — eighty-four years — Slatina paid tribute to the Turks. That is what the Ottoman century actually meant for an ordinary Slovak village: not a great battle, but a very long stretch of paying twice, to the landlord and to the raiders, and never knowing which year the riders would come. The Ottoman fortress line lay to the south; Slatina was one of the places behind it that had to buy its own quiet.Po tom, čo Osmani obsadili stredné Uhorsko, dorazili nájazdy aj do tejto doliny a Slatina si v 16. a 17. storočí postavila malú protitureckú pevnôstku. Nezabránila tomu, aby obec opakovane prepadli, a od roku 1584 až do roku 1668 — osemdesiatštyri rokov — bola Slatina poplatná Turkom. Toto znamenalo osmanské storočie pre obyčajnú slovenskú dedinu: nie veľkú bitku, ale veľmi dlhé obdobie platenia dvakrát, zemepánovi aj nájazdníkom, a nikdy sa nevedelo, ktorý rok jazdci prídu. Osmanská pevnostná línia ležala na juh; Slatina bola jedným z miest za ňou, ktoré si svoj pokoj muselo kupovať.
