Zvolenská Slatina lies about eight kilometres east of Zvolen on the river that names it, where the Zvolen basin narrows and the road and railway set off east towards Detva and Lučenec. The ground here is still flat and farmed; Poľana closes the northern horizon, and the scattered hill farms of the Podpoľanie begin just beyond the village.Zvolenská Slatina leží asi osem kilometrov východne od Zvolena na rieke, po ktorej sa volá, tam, kde sa Zvolenská kotlina zužuje a cesta so železnicou mieria na východ k Detve a Lučencu. This is long-settled ground rather than a clearing hacked out of forest: a village at a river crossing on the road east out of the basin, under the royal castle at Zvolen and a few kilometres short of the hunting lordship at Vígľaš. It farmed the valley floor, grazed the slopes, and kept one of the stronger Lutheran congregations in this part of the Hron country.Ide o dávno osídlenú pôdu, nie o čistinu vyklčovanú z lesa: obec pri brode na ceste na východ z kotliny, pod kráľovským zvolenským zámkom a pár kilometrov pred vígľašským poľovníckym panstvom. Terézia Vansová was born here in 1857, the daughter of the Lutheran pastor. She wrote the novel Sirota Podhradských and edited Dennica, the first Slovak magazine for women, at a period when a Slovak woman publishing at all was unusual; her married life was spent in a parish elsewhere and her last years in Banská Bystrica.V roku 1857 sa tu narodila Terézia Vansová, dcéra evanjelického farára. Napísala román Sirota Podhradských a redigovala Dennicu, prvý slovenský časopis pre ženy, v čase, keď bolo nezvyčajné, aby slovenská žena vôbec publikovala; manželský život prežila na fare inde a posledné roky v Banskej Bystrici.

Ján Bahýľ was born in the village a year earlier and left for the Austro-Hungarian army, where he served as an engineer and worked on machines of his own. The helicopter he is remembered for was built and flown in Bratislava, not here — the village is where he came from, and both he and Vansová have their own account elsewhere on this site.Ján Bahýľ sa v obci narodil o rok skôr a odišiel do rakúsko-uhorskej armády, kde slúžil ako inžinier a popri tom staval vlastné stroje. The village itself is the sight, in the honest sense of the word: a long main street of rendered farmhouses set gable-end to the road, barns and gardens behind them, and the Lutheran church standing over the roofs. Nothing is monumental and nothing is staged.Pamiatkou je tu v pravom zmysle slova samotná obec: dlhá hlavná ulica omietnutých gazdovských domov obrátených štítom do cesty, za nimi humná a záhrady, a nad strechami evanjelický kostol. Both natives are marked in the village — plaques, a bust, names on public buildings. Anything beyond that is opened on request rather than to posted hours, so ask at the municipal office if you want to see inside something.Obaja rodáci sú v obci pripomenutí — tabuľami, bustou, menami na verejných budovách. Zvolenská Slatina belongs to the Podpoľanie folklore country and keeps its own ensemble and its own reading of the costume — heavily embroidered, closer to Detva's than to anything from the lowland. A village occasion or one of the July regional festivals is the realistic chance of seeing it worn rather than displayed.Zvolenská Slatina patrí do podpolianskeho folklórneho kraja a má vlastný súbor aj vlastnú podobu kroja — husto vyšívanú, bližšiu detvianskej než čomukoľvek z nížiny. Living village, not a museumŽivá obec, nie skanzen

This is a big working village on a main road, not a destination: shops, a school, a health centre, farm machinery on the street in season, and a lot of people who work in Zvolen. There is no visitor centre and no admission charge to anything.Je to veľká fungujúca obec pri hlavnej ceste, nie cieľ cesty: obchody, škola, zdravotné stredisko, v sezóne poľnohospodárske stroje na ulici a veľa ľudí, ktorí pracujú vo Zvolene. The Lutheran church is a working parish church, normally locked outside services. What the village gives a visitor is a half-hour walk, a clear sense of how the Podpoľanie is entered, and a good base for Poľana and for Vígľaš, both a short drive on.Evanjelický kostol je fungujúcim farským kostolom a mimo bohoslužieb býva zamknutý. Čo obec návštevníkovi ponúka, je polhodinová prechádzka, jasná predstava o tom, ako sa do Podpoľania vchádza, a dobré východisko na Poľanu i do Vígľaša — oboje kúsok autom.

Getting thereAko sa tam dostať

Zvolenská Slatina is on the railway between Zvolen and Lučenec and on the main road east from Zvolen, with frequent buses; from Zvolen it is a quarter of an hour either way. Detva and Vígľaš are a few minutes further east, and the Poľana trailheads are reached from the villages north of the river.Zvolenská Slatina leží na železnici medzi Zvolenom a Lučencom a na hlavnej ceste zo Zvolena na východ, s častými autobusmi; zo Zvolena je to štvrťhodina jedným aj druhým. Detva a Vígľaš sú o pár minút ďalej na východ a k východiskám chodníkov na Poľanu sa ide cez obce severne od rieky.
