Everything at Hronský Beňadik follows from a narrows in a river. Just below the village the Hron squeezes through the Slovenská brána, the Slovak Gate, and whoever held that gate held the road between the lowland and the silver and gold mines of central Slovakia. In 1075 a king put a Benedictine abbey on the rock above it; five hundred years later the same rock was given walls and bastions and held as a fort. That is why a monastery here looks like a small castle.Všetko v Hronskom Beňadiku vyplýva z jednej úžiny na rieke. Hneď pod obcou sa Hron pretláča Slovenskou bránou, a kto držal túto bránu, držal cestu medzi nížinou a striebornými a zlatými baňami stredného Slovenska.

The Kingdom of HungaryUhorské kráľovstvo
In 1075 King Géza I of Hungary founded a Benedictine monastery here and dedicated it to St Benedict, which is where the village gets its name. Its founding charter is one of the oldest documents to name settlements in this part of the kingdom, so historians read it for the geography of the eleventh century as much as for the monks. Benedictines were not hermits: they farmed, kept accounts, copied books and ran estates, and an abbey was the closest thing to an institution that this valley had. The site was chosen for exactly the reason a soldier would have chosen it — a rock terrace above the water, at the point where the road out of the mining country has to squeeze between the hills.V roku 1075 tu uhorský kráľ Gejza I. založil benediktínsky kláštor a zasvätil ho svätému Benediktovi — odtiaľ má obec meno. Benediktíni neboli pustovníci: hospodárili, viedli účty, odpisovali knihy a spravovali majetky, a opátstvo bolo tomu, čo dnes voláme inštitúcia, v tejto doline najbližšie.
In 1209 Pope Innocent III confirmed the abbey's estates, and in the centuries that followed the house took on a job that sounds dull and mattered enormously: it became a place of authentication, a hodnoverné miesto — a monastery trusted to write, seal and store legal documents for a whole district. In a kingdom with no public notaries, that made the abbey the place where land was bought, wills were made and quarrels were settled on paper. The settlement below the walls grew on that traffic and received town privileges in 1347. If you want to know who owned what in this valley in the fourteenth century, the answer was kept in this building.V roku 1209 potvrdil pápež Inocent III. majetky opátstva a v ďalších storočiach začal kláštor robiť niečo, čo znie nudne a znamenalo nesmierne veľa: stal sa hodnoverným miestom — kláštorom, ktorému sa dôverovalo, že pre celý kraj spíše, spečatí a uschová právne listiny. Osada pod hradbami rástla z tohto ruchu a v roku 1347 dostala mestské výsady. Ak chcete vedieť, komu v štrnástom storočí v tejto doline čo patrilo, odpoveď sa uschovávala v tejto budove.
Between roughly 1346 and 1410 the old Romanesque church was pulled down and replaced by the tall three-aisled Gothic one that still stands. In 1489 a chapel was added for the abbey's most valuable possession: a relic venerated as a drop of the Blood of Christ, which tradition says reached Hungary as a gift from Pope Paul II to King Matthias Corvinus, and came from the king to this house. A relic like that brought pilgrims, and pilgrims brought money — which is how a small valley monastery could pay for a church on that scale. The sources are much vaguer about when the relic actually arrived than about when the chapel was built, so treat the story as tradition rather than a dated fact. Takáto relikvia priťahovala pútnikov a pútnici prinášali peniaze — a práve tak si mohol malý kláštor v doline dovoliť kostol takých rozmerov.
After the Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526 the frontier moved north and the abbey stopped being a monastery. The estate passed to the Archbishop of Esztergom in 1536 and to the Esztergom cathedral chapter in 1565 — churchmen who had themselves fled north from the Turks after their own city fell. They turned the complex into a fort: curtain walls, bastions and a gate tower thrown round the Gothic church, held as a strongpoint covering the road up to Kremnica and Banská Štiavnica. The little town below the walls was burned by Ottoman raiding parties, and here the sources genuinely disagree — 1559, 1573 and 1599 all appear in print for the burning of Beňadik, which is a useful reminder that a date in a book is only as good as the document behind it.Po osmanskom víťazstve pri Moháči roku 1526 sa hranica posunula na sever a opátstvo prestalo byť kláštorom.
In 1881 a fire broke out in the little town and damaged part of the monastery; the repairs ran from 1881 to 1889 and were paid for by the Primate of Hungary, János Simor. Restoration in that century usually meant reordering as well as mending, and much of the medieval furnishing left the building for good — panels, carvings and the architectural Holy Sepulchre chest went into Hungarian collections, the chest to the Christian Museum in Esztergom, where it is today. That is why a visit here is carried by architecture and vaulting rather than by what stands inside. Whether that was rescue or removal is still argued about on both sides of the border, and both arguments have something in them.V roku 1881 vypukol v mestečku požiar, ktorý poškodil aj časť kláštorného areálu; opravy trvali od roku 1881 do roku 1889 a zaplatil ich uhorský prímas Ján Simor. Preto návštevu nesie architektúra a klenby, a nie to, čo stojí vnútri.
The Kingdom of Hungary ended in 1918 and the village found itself in Czechoslovakia, with the border to Hungary now well away to the south. The complex, without a religious community since the sixteenth century, was given one again in 1927 when the Salesians moved in — an order founded in nineteenth-century Italy to teach and train poor boys, which is what they did here. After three and a half centuries as an estate office and a fortress, the buildings went back to being a religious house.
The First Vienna Award of 2 November 1938 handed Levice and the lowland to Hungary, putting a state border roughly thirty kilometres down this valley; Hronský Beňadik stayed inside what became, on 14 March 1939, the wartime Slovak State — an authoritarian one-party regime allied to Nazi Germany. The Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944 in the mountains up this same river, and the German army spent two months putting it down; the reprisals then went on all winter. On 21 January 1945, in the Kľak valley behind Žarnovica upstream, German units burned the villages of Ostrý Grúň and Kľak and killed close to a hundred and fifty of their people, most of them women, children and the old — memorials stand in both villages and the anniversary is still kept. The front reached the middle Hron only at the very end, when the Soviet offensive that opened on 25 March 1945 cleared the valley in a matter of days.Viedenská arbitráž z 2. novembra 1938 dala Levice a nížinu Maďarsku, takže štátna hranica sa ocitla asi tridsať kilometrov nižšie po tejto doline; Hronský Beňadik zostal v tom, čo sa 14. marca 1939 stalo vojnovým Slovenským štátom — autoritatívnym režimom jednej strany, spojencom nacistického Nemecka. Slovenské národné povstanie vypuklo 29. augusta 1944 v horách hore touto riekou a nemecká armáda ho dva mesiace potláčala; represálie potom trvali celú zimu.
The communists took full power in Czechoslovakia in February 1948 and moved against the churches within two years. On the night of 13–14 April 1950, in an operation the state itself called Action K, police and militia surrounded every male monastery in the country at the same hour, loaded the monks into buses and interned them in a handful of guarded houses; the orders were declared dissolved. The Salesians lost Hronský Beňadik along with everyone else, and for forty years the complex belonged to the state. Buildings survive that sort of night better than communities do.Komunisti prevzali v Československu plnú moc vo februári 1948 a do dvoch rokov sa pustili do cirkví. Saleziáni prišli o Hronský Beňadik spolu so všetkými ostatnými a areál na štyridsať rokov pripadol štátu. Budovy takú noc prežívajú lepšie ako spoločenstvá.
The Velvet Revolution of November 1989 ended the ban on religious orders, and the Salesians returned to Hronský Beňadik, staying until 1999. What they inherited was a very large medieval complex that had been repaired in the 1880s and neglected for most of the century since — damp, dispersed furnishings, roofs and vaults needing work. Restoration on a site like this is measured in decades rather than seasons, and parts of it still show the gap.
In independent Slovakia the abbey is a national cultural monument, a working parish church and a pilgrimage site for the Holy Blood, and in everyday life it is those three things in reverse order of fame. The Pallottines, a Catholic society founded in nineteenth-century Rome, serve here now. Restoration goes on in phases as money appears, tours inside are guided and seasonal, and out of season the church is locked like any other. Come for the abbey and the river gorge below it, and expect to find a parish rather than a museum.V samostatnom Slovensku je opátstvo národnou kultúrnou pamiatkou, fungujúcim farským kostolom a pútnickým miestom svätej Krvi — a v každodennom živote je tým všetkým v opačnom poradí, než v akom je to slávne.
