In the 1970s conservators here went further than at almost any other Slovak ruin: a corner tower and a stretch of curtain wall were rebuilt close to full height, in the same basalt the medieval masons had used. The work later stopped, and the site remains a hybrid — part consolidated ruin, part reconstruction — but it is the reason Šomoška reads as a castle rather than as a heap of stones. The basalt formations below, including the curved fan known as the stone waterfall, are protected as a national nature reserve.V sedemdesiatych rokoch tu pamiatkari zašli ďalej než takmer pri ktorejkoľvek inej slovenskej zrúcanine: nárožnú vežu a časť obvodového múru vymurovali takmer do pôvodnej výšky, a to z toho istého čadiča, aký použili stredovekí murári. Práce neskôr ustali a lokalita zostala hybridom — sčasti konzervovaná zrúcanina, sčasti rekonštrukcia — no práve preto pôsobí Šomoška ako hrad, a nie ako kopa kameňov. Čadičové útvary pod hradom vrátane prehnutého vejára, ktorému sa hovorí kamenný vodopád, sú chránené ako národná prírodná rezervácia.
