ŠomoškaŠomoška

Šomoška went up in the decades after the Mongol invasion of 1241, when King Béla IV wanted stone castles on high ground all over the kingdom. The builder is named as Peter of the Kacsics kindred, and the castle is attested before 1291. His masons used what was under their feet: the crag is a plug of basalt that cooled into five- and six-sided columns, and the walls are laid up from those columns like a dry-stone honeycomb. No other castle in Slovakia is built this way.Šomoška vyrástla v desaťročiach po mongolskom vpáde roku 1241, keď kráľ Belo IV. chcel mať po celom kráľovstve kamenné hrady na vyvýšeninách.
