In 1618 the county diet ordered the castle strengthened again, and it lived on into the century of the risings against the Habsburgs. How it died is disputed. Hungarian accounts say the buildings were burned out by raiding cavalry during the siege of Fiľakovo in 1682; Slovak ones say the kuruc troops of Francis II Rákóczi held it in 1703 and that the imperial army demolished it afterwards. Both versions agree on the part that matters: Šomoška was not destroyed by the Ottomans. It was wrecked in the wars Hungary fought against its own emperor, and afterwards nobody thought it worth rebuilding. Rákócziho a cisárske vojsko ho potom dalo zbúrať. V podstatnom sa obe verzie zhodujú: Šomošku nezničili Osmani. Rozbili ju vojny, ktoré Uhorsko viedlo proti vlastnému cisárovi, a obnoviť ju potom nikto nepovažoval za potrebné.
