The Slovak State declared on 14 March 1939 was governed by the party that carried the name of Andrej Hlinka (1864–1938), the Catholic priest of Ružomberok, the nearest town; Hlinka himself had died before the state existed. On 27 August 1944, at the very start of the Slovak National Uprising, insurgent forces cleared Ružomberok of German soldiers. The front then ground through the Liptov basin over the following winter and Liptovský Mikuláš, east of here, was only liberated on 4 April 1945.Slovenský štát vyhlásený 14. marca 1939 spravovala strana, ktorá niesla meno Andreja Hlinku (1864 – 1938), katolíckeho farára z Ružomberka, najbližšieho mesta; sám Hlinka zomrel ešte pred vznikom štátu. 27. augusta 1944, hneď na začiatku Slovenského národného povstania, vyčistili povstalecké jednotky Ružomberok od nemeckých vojakov. Front sa potom celú nasledujúcu zimu prehrýzal Liptovskou kotlinou a Liptovský Mikuláš východne odtiaľto oslobodili až 4. apríla 1945.
