Long before any charter there was a settlement on the ground Rajec now stands on, belonging to what archaeologists call the Púchov culture — the people of these northern valleys around the turn of the era, in the centuries when Celts, the Roman army on the Danube and Germanic tribes were all in play. They left nothing written. What they left is pottery, hearths and post-holes, dug up and dated by excavation. It is a reminder that this valley was worth living in two thousand years before anyone wrote its name down.Dávno pred akoukoľvek listinou stálo na mieste dnešného Rajca sídlisko takzvanej púchovskej kultúry — ľudí, ktorí obývali tieto severné doliny okolo prelomu letopočtu, v čase, keď na scéne boli Kelti, rímske vojsko na Dunaji aj germánske kmene. Nezanechali nič písané. Zostala po nich keramika, ohniská a stopy po koloch, ktoré odkryl a datoval archeologický výskum. Je to pripomienka, že v tejto doline sa oplatilo žiť dvetisíc rokov predtým, než jej meno niekto zapísal.
