1193 Raich, on a boundary lineRaich na hranici chotára

Rajec first appears in writing in 1193, in a charter of King Béla III, spelled Raich — and it appears there not because anyone was interested in the place but because it lay on a boundary somebody was describing. That is how most Slovak villages enter history: as a landmark in someone else's property business. The land belonged first to the chapter and bishopric of Nitra, and by the end of the thirteenth century to the archbishopric of Esztergom. Note what the date does and does not say: it tells you when a clerk wrote the name down, not when people arrived.Rajec sa v písomnostiach prvý raz objavuje v roku 1193, v listine kráľa Bela III., v podobe Raich — a to nie preto, že by oň niekto stál, ale preto, že ležal na hranici chotára, ktorú niekto práve opisoval. Takto sa do dejín dostáva väčšina slovenských obcí: ako medzník v cudzej majetkovej veci. Územie patrilo najprv Nitrianskej kapitule a biskupstvu a koncom 13. storočia Ostrihomskému arcibiskupstvu. Všimni si, čo ten rok hovorí a čo nie: hovorí, kedy pisár meno zapísal, nie kedy sem ľudia prišli.
