The Ottoman frontier never came within a hundred kilometres of this valley and no army sacked Rajec in the sixteenth century. What the record keeps instead is duller and more useful: in 1598 the town had 138 houses. By the standards of northern Hungary that is a real town, and it sat on the road over the pass at the moment when the Lietava estate below it was passing to the Thurzos — the family that had made a fortune in copper in partnership with the Fugger bank of Augsburg, and would give the kingdom a palatine.Osmanská hranica sa k tejto doline nepriblížila ani na sto kilometrov a Rajec v 16. storočí nikto nevyplienil.
