The Slovak National Uprising began on 29 August 1944. In Rajec a Revolutionary National Committee — the insurgents' own civil authority, replacing the officials of the Slovak State — was set up on 11 September 1944, while the rising still held the country between here and Banská Bystrica. It did not hold long: German units broke the insurgent territory that autumn and the fighters went up into the mountains on both sides of the valley. Rajec was liberated on 29 April 1945 by Romanian troops, who had changed sides in 1944 and fought their way across Slovakia alongside the Red Army — a part of the story usually left out, and worth knowing.Slovenské národné povstanie vypuklo 29. augusta 1944. Dlho to nevydržalo: nemecké jednotky na jeseň povstalecké územie rozlomili a bojovníci odišli do hôr po oboch stranách doliny. Rajec oslobodili 29. apríla 1945 rumunské jednotky, ktoré v roku 1944 prešli na stranu spojencov a prebojovali sa cez Slovensko po boku Červenej armády — časť príbehu, ktorá sa zvyčajne vynecháva a oplatí sa ju vedieť.
