In the fourteenth century Rajec belonged to the Lietava estate, whose castle stands on a limestone crest over the ridge to the north. There was something fortified at Rajec itself as well: a document of 1358 names its castellan, the officer who commanded a castle, and in 1393 the place is written castrum Raycz. The last mention of it is from 1644 and nothing of it stands today. From 1397 Rajec is described as a town, holding markets under the law of Žilina, with Saint Ladislaus on its seal — the saint who is still on the town's arms.V 14. storočí patril Rajec k lietavskému panstvu, ktorého hrad stojí na vápencovom hrebeni za kopcami na severe. Aj v samotnom Rajci však čosi opevnené bolo: listina z roku 1358 menuje jeho kastelána, teda veliteľa hradu, a v roku 1393 sa miesto píše ako castrum Raycz. Naposledy sa spomína v roku 1644 a dnes po ňom nič nestojí. Od roku 1397 sa Rajec označuje ako mestečko s trhovým právom podľa žilinského práva a so svätým Ladislavom v pečati — tým istým, ktorý je v mestskom erbe dodnes.
