This is the whole argument for a mall in the middle of a town. Walk out of the doors, climb the steps, and you are on Mariánske námestie — a square enclosed on all four sides by continuous arcades, one of the finest surviving in the country and the reason Žilina's core is a protected heritage reserve. Žilina is also a gateway. On the northern edge of the city, where the Kysuca flows into the Váh, stands Budatín Castle, home of the regional museum and of the country's best-known collection of tinkers' wirework. East of the city the Váh squeezes into a gorge guarded by two castles facing each other — Strečno on its rock above the river and the ruin of Starhrad opposite. South, above the Rajčianka valley, the huge ruin of Lietava spreads over its ridge. And beyond the gorge the road opens into the Malá Fatra, the Vrátna valley and Terchová — which is why Žilina fills with rucksacks every Friday evening.Žilina je zároveň bránou.
