A Castle Found, a Parsonage LostNájdený hrad, stratená fara
Žilina's old town sits on a low terrace, and everything important in the city climbs it. At the top is Mariánske námestie, a complete arcaded square of the kind that has survived almost nowhere else in Slovakia. Below it, reached by the Farské schody — the parish steps — is the far larger, far more modern Námestie Andreja Hlinku. The strip between the two was church ground: the parish complex that served the town from the Middle Ages onwards. Clearing part of it to build a shopping centre was never going to be uncontroversial, and it was not. The demolition of the former parsonage that stood there drew sustained public objection, and the site sits on the edge of a protected urban heritage reserve.Staré mesto Žiliny stojí na nízkej terase a všetko dôležité v meste na ňu vystupuje. Pod ním, po Farských schodoch, leží oveľa väčšie a oveľa modernejšie Námestie Andreja Hlinku. Pás medzi nimi patril cirkvi: bol to farský areál, ktorý slúžil mestu od stredoveku. Uvoľniť jeho časť pre obchodné centrum nemohlo prejsť bez sporov — a ani neprešlo. Zbúranie niekdajšej fary, ktorá tu stála, vyvolalo trvalý odpor verejnosti a pozemok leží na okraji chránenej mestskej pamiatkovej rezervácie.
Then the excavation gave something back. Digging for the foundations in 2008 uncovered masonry identified as the remains of Žilina Castle — a medieval fortification that stood on this terrace and had long since disappeared so completely from the townscape that most residents did not know where to look for it. The find was preserved rather than cleared, and part of it is displayed inside the finished building. The centre opened to the public on 15 November 2010. Whether a mall was the right way to rediscover a castle is a question Žilina has still not entirely settled.Potom výkop niečo vrátil. Pri hĺbení základov v roku 2008 sa objavilo murivo označené za pozostatky Žilinského hradu — stredovekého opevnenia, ktoré na tejto terase stálo a z obrazu mesta zmizlo tak dôkladne, že väčšina obyvateľov už netušila, kde ho hľadať. Nález sa nezlikvidoval, ale zachoval, a jeho časť je vystavená priamo v hotovej budove. Pre verejnosť sa centrum otvorilo 15. novembra 2010. Či bolo obchodné centrum tým správnym spôsobom, ako znovuobjaviť hrad, si Žilina dodnes celkom nevyjasnila.
