Where the Váh forces its way through the Malá Fatra, the valley narrows to a gorge and a castle sits on the rock above it. Strečno was built to take toll from everything that passed — road traffic on one side, timber rafts on the water below — and after three centuries as a ruin it was rebuilt and opened again in the 1990s.Tam, kde sa Váh prediera Malou Fatrou, sa údolie zúži na tiesňavu a na skale nad ňou sedí hrad. Strečno postavili preto, aby vyberalo mýto zo všetkého, čo tadiaľ prešlo — z cestnej dopravy na jednej strane a z pltí na vode pod hradom — a po troch storočiach v ruinách ho v deväťdesiatych rokoch obnovili a znovu otvorili.
