On 27 August 1944 the soldiers of the Ružomberok garrison, helped by partisans, cleared German troops out of the town — two days before German forces crossed into Slovakia in strength and the Slovak National Uprising was declared. The rising held Liptov for a matter of weeks. Then a German battle group pushed north and north-east towards Ružomberok, and the reprisals came behind the fighting: German units burned part of Vlkolínec, the log village on the shelf above the town, during the suppression, and those houses were rebuilt afterwards in the old manner. The front itself did not reach the valley until the following winter, and it came slowly — Liptovský Mikuláš, up the basin, was besieged for months and was not taken until 4 April 1945.27. augusta 1944 vyčistili vojaci ružomberskej posádky spolu s partizánmi mesto od nemeckých vojakov — dva dni predtým, než nemecké jednotky vo veľkom prekročili slovenské hranice a bolo vyhlásené Slovenské národné povstanie. Povstanie udržalo Liptov len niekoľko týždňov. Potom sa nemecká bojová skupina tlačila na sever a severovýchod smerom na Ružomberok a za bojmi prišli represálie: pri potláčaní povstania vypálili nemecké jednotky časť Vlkolínca, drevenej dedinky na terase nad mestom, a tie domy potom postavili nanovo starým spôsobom. Samotný front dorazil do doliny až v nasledujúcej zime a postupoval pomaly — Liptovský Mikuláš vyššie v kotline obliehali celé mesiace a padol až 4. apríla 1945.
