Likava CastleLikavský hrad
The most important thing that happened under this castle in the nineteenth century happened not to the walls but to the people in their shadow. On 27 October 1907 at Černová — then a village, today a district of Ružomberok — gendarmes fired into a crowd that had gathered in a dispute over who should consecrate the new church; fifteen people were killed. The villagers wanted their own priest, Andrej Hlinka, who had been suspended from his office; the authorities sent someone else. Because the Norwegian writer Björnstjerne Björnson and the British historian R. W. Seton-Watson took the case up abroad, Černová did more than any other single event to turn Magyarization — the policy of pressing Hungarian language and identity on the kingdom's other peoples — into an international scandal.Najdôležitejšia vec, ktorá sa v 19. storočí odohrala pod týmto hradom, sa nestala múrom, ale ľuďom v ich tieni. 27. októbra 1907 v Černovej — vtedy samostatnej dedine, dnes mestskej časti Ružomberka — vystrelili žandári do zhromaždeného davu počas sporu o to, kto má vysvätiť nový kostol; pätnásť ľudí zahynulo. Dedinčania chceli svojho kňaza Andreja Hlinku, ktorý mal vtedy zastavený výkon úradu; vrchnosť poslala niekoho iného. Keďže sa prípadu v zahraničí ujali nórsky spisovateľ Björnstjerne Björnson a britský historik R. W. Seton-Watson, urobila Černová pre premenu maďarizácie — politiky vnucovania maďarského jazyka a identity ostatným národom kráľovstva — na medzinárodný škandál viac než ktorákoľvek iná jediná udalosť.
