Likava CastleLikavský hrad
Ask anyone in Liptov about Likava and the name Juraj Jánošík will come up — the outlaw of Slovak folk tradition, the man who supposedly took from the rich and gave to the poor. Tradition told locally holds that he was kept in the castle's dungeon before his trial, and that story belongs to the place; people have told it here for generations. What the documents record is different and narrower: his trial and execution at Liptovský Mikuláš in 1713, with the written record of the trial surviving, which is more than most European outlaw legends can show. There is also a plain problem of dates. The castle had been demolished six years before that trial, in 1707 — so the dungeon story and the ruin do not fit together comfortably. Treat it as folklore attached to a real place, which is what most castle stories are. Hrad zbúrali šesť rokov pred tým súdom, v roku 1707 — príbeh o žalári a zrúcanina k sebe teda príliš nesedia.
