In 1663 the great fortress of Nové Zámky fell to the Ottomans and raiding parties spread right across western Slovakia; the villages at the foot of this range lay in their path. Forty years later came the uprising of Francis II Rákóczi against the Habsburgs, and on 26 December 1704 his kuruc army — kuruc was the name for the insurgent soldiers — was beaten in a battle outside Trnava, a few kilometres from here. Most accounts date the castle's wrecking to that war rather than to any Turkish attack. It is the ordinary Slovak pattern: a castle blamed on the Ottomans was usually finished off by a civil war between Hungarians and their own king. Väčšina prameňov kladie skazu hradu práve do tejto vojny, nie k nejakému tureckému útoku. Je to typický slovenský vzorec: hrad, ktorý ľudová pamäť pripíše Turkom, zvyčajne dorazila občianska vojna medzi Uhrami a ich vlastným kráľom.
