A chain of castles ran along the crest of the Little Carpathians, each one watching a pass over the range, and Smolenice was the last of them to be built. It stands exactly where a route through the hills comes out onto the Trnava plain — that gap, not the view, is the reason for the whole thing. Sources disagree about when: Slovak accounts put its origin in the fourteenth century, English-language ones in the fifteenth, and nobody has a foundation charter to settle it. In 1388 King Sigismund granted the Smolenice estate to Stibor of Stiboricz, a Polish-born nobleman who became the most powerful landowner in this whole corner of the kingdom.Po hrebeni Malých Karpát viedla reťaz hradov a každý strážil jeden priesmyk cez pohorie; Smolenice z nich postavili ako posledné. Stoja presne tam, kde cesta cez vrchy vyúsťuje do Trnavskej roviny — dôvodom je tá brána, nie výhľad. Pramene sa v datovaní nezhodujú: slovenské kladú vznik hradu do 14. storočia, anglické do 15. a zakladacia listina, ktorá by spor rozhodla, nejestvuje. Roku 1388 daroval kráľ Žigmund smolenické panstvo Stiborovi zo Stiboríc, šľachticovi poľského pôvodu, z ktorého sa stal najmocnejší zemepán v celom tomto kúte kráľovstva.
