Ask in the region what wrecked this castle and someone will tell you the Turks did. They did not. In 1708 Čachtice was stormed by the kuruc, the rebel army of Francis II Rákóczi, a Hungarian magnate who had risen against the Habsburg emperor in 1703 and held much of Slovakia for eight years; from that point the castle was never properly repaired. This was a civil war inside the kingdom rather than a war on a frontier: the men who took these walls spoke the same languages as the men defending them. The Ottoman front had in fact stopped a long way south — the great fortress of Nové Zámky fell to the sultan in 1663 and raiding parties ranged north of it — but no Ottoman army is recorded at Čachtice, and the story that one destroyed the castle is simply the wrong enemy attached to a real ruin.Spýtajte sa v okolí, kto tento hrad zničil, a niekto vám povie, že Turci.
