The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov
Čachtice CastleČachtický hrad
In the spring of 1241 the Mongol army destroyed the army of the Kingdom of Hungary and rode across the country, and King Béla IV came out of hiding convinced that earth banks and wooden palisades were worthless. His answer was stone, and he pressed the great families to build it. Čachtice came out of that programme: it was raised around the middle of the thirteenth century by Kazimír of the Hont-Poznan kindred, on the limestone crest where the Little Carpathians run out and the road up the Váh turns towards Moravia. From up there a garrison could see who was coming long before they arrived, which is the entire reason the site was chosen. So the most famous year in the history of Slovak castles is not the year Čachtice fell — it is the year Čachtice became worth building.
