Stibor's son, Stibor of Beckov, died in 1434 with no male heir, and the enormous Váh-valley lordship his father had assembled was carved up between the crown and other families; Čachtice went on changing hands, at one stage to the Országh family. What the next century did to the building is the first thing you notice on the ridge today. The compact core on the highest rock is the medieval castle, built when the danger was men with ladders. The long lower wards and the rounded bastion below belong to the age of gunpowder, when walls had to become thick and low instead of tall and thin. Čachtický hrad teda nie je jedna stavba, ale rad odpovedí na rôzne zbrane, poukladaný pozdĺž hrebeňa.
