In the second half of the sixteenth century Čachtice came to the Nádasdy family; Slovak sources date the acquisition to 1569, English ones tie it to Elizabeth Báthory's marriage to Ferenc Nádasdy in 1575 and call it a wedding gift, and the two accounts have never been reconciled. Ferenc died in 1604, and his widow Elizabeth Báthory administered the estate from here. At the very end of 1610 the palatine Juraj Thurzó — the kingdom's highest officer below the king — arrived on King Matthias II's authority and took the castle; four of her servants were tried in January 1611, three of them executed. Báthory herself was never charged and never tried: she was shut up in her own castle and died here on 21 August 1614, aged fifty-four. Celkom na konci roka 1610 prišiel z poverenia kráľa Mateja II. palatín Juraj Turzo — najvyšší úradník kráľovstva hneď po panovníkovi — a hrad obsadil; štyroch jej služobníkov v januári 1611 odsúdili, troch popravili. Samotnú Bátoriovú nikdy neobvinili a nikdy nesúdili: zavreli ju na jej vlastnom hrade a 21. augusta 1614 tu vo veku päťdesiatštyri rokov zomrela.
