November 1989 – 1992 After the planPo pláne

The Velvet Revolution began with a student demonstration in Prague on 17 November 1989 and was carried by a general strike on 27 November; in Poprad, as in every district town, people came out onto the square and the local party leadership gave way without violence. What followed was harder than the revolution itself. Factories built to supply a guaranteed market inside the Soviet bloc had to find customers who were free to say no; employment fell, and a town assembled around heavy industry had to work out what else it was. Two things carried it through: the mountains on its doorstep, and a wagon works that could sell into western Europe.Nežná revolúcia sa začala študentskou demonštráciou v Prahe 17. novembra 1989 a niesol ju generálny štrajk 27. novembra; v Poprade, ako v každom okresnom meste, vyšli ľudia na námestie a miestne vedenie ustúpilo bez násilia. Ťažšie prišlo potom. Fabriky postavené pre zaručený odbyt vo východnom bloku si museli nájsť zákazníkov, ktorí môžu povedať nie; zamestnanosť klesla a mesto poskladané okolo ťažkého priemyslu muselo zistiť, čím ešte je. Preniesli ho cez to dve veci: hory za oknom a vagónka, ktorá sa dokázala presadiť aj v západnej Európe.
