Poprad's oldest factory was a paper mill, working from 1692 — a reminder that industry here is older than any chimney. Then in 1772, during the First Partition of Poland, Austria took the pawned towns back, and from that point they were administered as the Province of Sixteen Spiš Towns inside Hungary. Three and a half centuries of divided loyalty ended in a single administrative act. Nobody moved and nothing was destroyed, but the courts, the taxes and the officials all changed, and the towns had to learn to be Hungarian towns again.Najstaršou popradskou fabrikou bola papiereň, ktorá pracovala od roku 1692 — pripomienka, že priemysel je tu starší než hociktorý komín. Roku 1772 sa pri prvom delení Poľska skončil dlhý poľský záloh: Rakúsko zálohované mestá obsadilo späť a odvtedy sa spravovali ako provincia šestnástich spišských miest v rámci Uhorska. Tri a pol storočia rozdelenej príslušnosti sa skončili jediným úradným aktom. Nikto sa nesťahoval a nič sa neborilo, zmenili sa však súdy, dane aj úradníci — a mestá sa museli nanovo naučiť byť uhorskými mestami.
