The village came into being at the start of the thirteenth century and is first written down in 1288, as Landok; documents also spell it Ruda, Landeck, Landec and Landocinum, and only from 1808 Lendak. It lay in the lands granted to master Gallus, called Kokoš, and so belonged to the Dunajec estate of the Berzeviczy family, whose castle watched the river that is now the Polish border. This is high, cold ground where grain was never reliable, so from the beginning the village lived on sheep and cattle on the mountain pasture, on potatoes, on the forest, and on work away from home.Obec vznikla na začiatku 13. storočia a písomne je doložená od roku 1288 pod menom Landok; listiny ju zapisujú aj ako Ruda, Landeck, Landec či Landocinum a až od roku 1808 ako Lendak. Ležala v donačnom území magistra Galla, zvaného Kokoš, a patrila teda k dunajeckému panstvu Berzeviczyovcov, ktorých hrad strážil rieku, čo je dnes poľskou hranicou. Je to vysoká a studená zem, kde obilie nikdy nebolo isté, a tak dedina od začiatku žila z oviec a dobytka na horských pasienkoch, zo zemiakov, z lesa a z práce mimo domu.
