The uprisingsPovstania
Spišské PodhradieSpišské Podhradie
In the anti-Habsburg uprisings the fighting came literally over the town's head, on the rock above it. Thököly's kuruc besieged the castle from August to mid-November 1683 and never took it; in December 1703 Rákóczi's men did take it, at Christmas, and held it for three years. Imperial troops broke openings in the upper walls so that their cannon could cover the road below — the road that runs through the town. It is worth being clear about who was fighting whom: these were Hungarian nobles' uprisings against the Habsburg emperor, not Ottoman attacks, and the Turks never took the castle.V protihabsburských povstaniach sa bojovalo doslova nad hlavami mešťanov, na skale nad mestom. Oplatí sa mať jasno, kto proti komu bojoval: boli to povstania uhorskej šľachty proti habsburskému cisárovi, nie turecké útoky, a Turci hrad nikdy nedobyli.
