The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov
Spišské PodhradieSpišské Podhradie
German settlers came here through the second half of the twelfth century and the thirteenth, and the town joined the Community of Spiš Saxons; its German name, Kirchdrauf, stuck to it for seven hundred years. The Mongol invasion of 1241 emptied the region and the resettlement that followed filled it again. Between 1245 and 1273 the canons on the ridge built the cathedral of St Martin — late Romanesque, with a twin-towered west front — using masons of the same north-Italian school that was working on the castle. The town's own first written mention is a charter of King Béla IV in 1249, and by the thirteenth century it had grown into a market town that was no longer simply part of the castle estate.V druhej polovici 12. a v 13. storočí sem prichádzali nemeckí osadníci a mesto sa stalo súčasťou Spoločenstva spišských Sasov; nemecké meno Kirchdrauf mu ostalo na sedemsto rokov.
