The settlement grew up west of the castle rock, probably already in the eleventh century, as the service village of the fortress above it — which is exactly what its name says: podhradie means the place below the castle. On the opposite ridge something quite different was taking shape. A monastery, probably Benedictine, stood nearby in the eleventh century, and towards the end of the twelfth the Spiš provostship was founded on the ridge — a college of canons, headed by a provost, first mentioned in writing in 1235. From the start this small town had two masters who were not the same: a royal castle on one side and a church town on the other, each with its own law.Osada vyrástla západne od hradného brala, pravdepodobne už v 11. storočí, ako služobná dedina pevnosti nad ňou — presne to hovorí aj jej meno: podhradie je miesto pod hradom. Na protiľahlom hrebeni však vznikalo čosi celkom iné. V 11. storočí stál neďaleko kláštor, zrejme benediktínsky, a koncom 12. storočia tam vzniklo spišské prepoštstvo — zbor kanonikov na čele s prepoštom, prvý raz písomne doložený v roku 1235. Mestečko malo teda od začiatku dvoch pánov, a nie tých istých: na jednej strane kráľovský hrad, na druhej cirkevné mestečko, každé s vlastným právom.
