The village was founded in 1731 at the instance of Count Juraj Erdődy, on the Orava estate, and given the Hungarian name Erdútka. The name is usually explained in two ways, and both are really the same word: after the count himself, and from erdő, the Hungarian for forest. Either way it says what the place was for. The settlers were Gorals, highlanders from the country on both sides of what is now the Polish border, and they came to fell trees rather than to farm. You can still read that in the shape of the village: a string of hamlets strung out along the valley rather than a compact centre, which is how settlements founded for timber tend to look.Obec vznikla v roku 1731 z podnetu grófa Juraja Erdődyho na oravskom panstve a dostala maďarské meno Erdútka. Meno sa zvykne vysvetľovať dvoma spôsobmi, ktoré sú v skutočnosti jedno slovo: podľa samotného grófa a podľa maďarského erdő, teda les. Tak či onak hovorí, načo to miesto bolo. Osadníkmi boli gorali, horali z krajiny na oboch stranách dnešnej poľskej hranice, a prišli rúbať stromy, nie gazdovať. Na dnešnom tvare dediny sa to dá stále prečítať: je to reťaz osád pozdĺž doliny, nie zomknuté centrum, a tak vyzerajú sídla založené kvôli drevu.
