The Slovak Republic came into being on 1 January 1993, and the thing that had ruined Námestovo's past turned into its future. The reservoir is now the town's summer: beaches, a marina, sailing and windsurfing, and in a hard winter an ice sheet people walk on — though the water is shallow and mountain-fed, so the season is genuinely short. A boat runs out to the Slanica island, where the church of the drowned village holds a collection of Slovak folk sculpture and painting, with gravestones gathered from the flooded cemeteries standing around it. Anton Bernolák's birthplace is somewhere under the surface below, which makes that island the closest thing the Slovak language has to a birthplace you reach by boat.Prvého januára 1993 vznikla Slovenská republika a z toho, čo Námestovu zničilo minulosť, sa stala jeho budúcnosť. Rodný dom Antona Bernoláka je kdesi pod hladinou pod ním, a tak je ten ostrov najbližšie, čo slovenčina má k rodisku, ku ktorému sa treba priplaviť.
