1920 Half of the Upper Orava becomes PolandPolovica hornej Oravy pripadne Poľsku

Námestovo is the Slovak town closest to the Goral villages of northern Orava, and in 1920 those villages were taken away from it. On 28 July 1920 the Conference of Ambassadors gave twelve of them — roughly 389 square kilometres and sixteen thousand people — to Poland, after the promised plebiscite was cancelled. The market town lost part of the countryside that came to its fairs, and families found themselves living in two states, with a customs post between the parish and the pasture. Nobody in those villages was asked.Námestovo je slovenským mestom najbližšie ku goralským dedinám severnej Oravy — a v roku 1920 o tieto dediny prišlo. Konferencia veľvyslancov pridelila 28. júla 1920 dvanásť z nich, zhruba 389 kilometrov štvorcových a šestnásťtisíc ľudí, Poľsku; sľúbený plebiscit sa predtým zrušil. Mestečko stratilo časť vidieka, ktorý mu chodil na jarmoky, a rodiny sa zrazu ocitli v dvoch štátoch, s colnicou medzi farou a pasienkom. Nikoho v tých dedinách sa nikto nepýtal.
