A fire had already gutted much of the town in 1943. Then the front arrived. The fighting for Námestovo on Easter Monday, 2 April 1945, killed sixty-four inhabitants and destroyed around sixty per cent of the buildings; German units were pulling back northwards and burning as they went, and Trstená had been set alight a few days earlier. What a visitor sees today is therefore mostly post-war construction. The old centre of this town exists in photographs.Veľká časť mesta zhorela už pri požiari v roku 1943. Potom prišiel front. Boje o Námestovo na Veľkonočný pondelok 2. apríla 1945 si vyžiadali šesťdesiatštyri mŕtvych obyvateľov a zničili asi šesťdesiat percent budov; nemecké jednotky ustupovali na sever a cestou pálili — Trstenú podpálili o pár dní skôr. To, čo dnes návštevník vidí, je preto väčšinou povojnová zástavba. Staré centrum tohto mesta existuje už len na fotografiách.
