On 3 October 1762 Anton Bernolák was born at Slanica, a village a few kilometres from Námestovo. He became a Catholic priest, and in 1787 he and a circle of seminary students in Bratislava published the argument that Slovaks should write their own language rather than Czech; in 1790 he followed it with the first normative grammar of Slovak, and he spent years on a six-volume dictionary that appeared only after his death. The version of Slovak he codified — bernolákovčina — was not the one that finally won, but it was the first, and every later argument started from it. He died at Nové Zámky in 1813.Tretieho októbra 1762 sa v Slanici, dedine pár kilometrov od Námestova, narodil Anton Bernolák.
