Dolný Kubín today is the largest town in Orava and the seat of its district, with about seventeen thousand people. The county house on the square is the Orava Gallery, whose collections run from Gothic panel painting to twentieth-century Slovak art; the Čaplovič library still stands in the hall built for it; and the Orava Museum, which carries Hviezdoslav's name, works from this town and looks after Orava Castle and the memorial houses at Vyšný Kubín and Jasenová. Electrical manufacturing is still the backbone of the local economy, alongside metalworking and the forestry that is the constant trade of the whole valley. The one thing that has not changed in six hundred years is the reason the town is here at all: this is where the Orava valley widens enough to hold a square.Dolný Kubín je dnes najväčšie mesto Oravy a sídlo okresu, má asi sedemnásťtisíc obyvateľov. V stoličnom dome na námestí sídli Oravská galéria so zbierkami od gotického tabuľového maliarstva po slovenské umenie 20. storočia, Čaplovičova knižnica stále stojí v budove postavenej pre ňu a Oravské múzeum, ktoré nesie Hviezdoslavovo meno, pracuje z tohto mesta a spravuje aj Oravský hrad a pamätné domy vo Vyšnom Kubíne a v Jasenovej. Chrbtovou kosťou miestneho hospodárstva je stále elektrotechnika, popri nej kovovýroba a lesníctvo, ktoré je stálym remeslom celej doliny. Jediné, čo sa za šesťsto rokov nezmenilo, je dôvod, prečo tu mesto vôbec je: práve tu sa oravská dolina rozšíri natoľko, aby uniesla námestie.
