When the First World War broke out in 1914 the men of Orava were conscripted into the Austro-Hungarian army and sent to the Serbian, Russian and Italian fronts. Hviezdoslav was sixty-five, living in this town, and he answered the war with Krvavé sonety — the Bloody Sonnets — a cycle attacking not one army but the war itself, and the idea that a Christian Europe could do this to itself. They could not be printed in wartime Hungary and appeared only after it was over. It is one of the strongest anti-war works written in Slovak, and it was written in a district town of about two thousand people.Keď v roku 1914 vypukla prvá svetová vojna, oravských mužov odviedli do rakúsko-uhorskej armády a poslali na srbský, ruský a taliansky front.
