Boilers and pressure vessels, welding and steel fabrication are still what Tlmače does, on a smaller scale than in the 1980s but with the skills still in the town. Everybody else drives: to Levice, to the Mochovce nuclear station west of it, and to the engineering and car plants around Nitra. There are almost no monuments here and the town does not pretend otherwise; what it has is the Slovak Gate — fast clear water between wooded slopes — and, a short way upstream, the Gothic abbey church at Hronský Beňadik whose charter first put its name in writing. Nine hundred years on, the same narrows still decides where the road, the railway and the work go.Kotly a tlakové nádoby, zváranie a oceľové konštrukcie sú stále tým, čo Tlmače vedia — v menšom rozsahu než v 80. rokoch, ale remeslo v meste zostalo. Ostatní dochádzajú: do Levíc, do atómovej elektrárne v Mochovciach a do strojárskych a automobilových závodov okolo Nitry. Pamiatok tu takmer niet a mesto to ani nepredstiera; má však Slovenskú bránu — rýchlu čistú vodu medzi zalesnenými svahmi — a kúsok proti prúdu gotický kláštorný kostol v Hronskom Beňadiku, ktorého listina prvýkrát zapísala meno Tlmáč. Po deväťsto rokoch tá istá úžina stále rozhoduje, kadiaľ ide cesta, železnica aj práca.
