Tlmače stand on the Hron at the Slovak Gate, the narrow passage where the river forces its way between the Pohronský Inovec and the Štiavnica hills and comes out into the lowland. Levice is about ten kilometres downstream; upstream the valley closes in again and climbs towards the old mining country.Tlmače ležia na Hrone pri Slovenskej bráne, v úžine, kde si rieka razí cestu medzi Pohronským Inovcom a Štiavnickými vrchmi a vychádza do nížiny. Levice sú asi desať kilometrov po prúde, proti prúdu sa dolina znovu zužuje a stúpa k starému banskému kraju.

The town is small — a few thousand people — and its plan can be read at a glance: the old village strung along the river, the planned housing built above it for the plant's workers, and the plant itself on the level ground between the water and the railway.Mesto je malé — pár tisíc ľudí — a jeho pôdorys sa dá prečítať na prvý pohľad: stará dedina natiahnutá pozdĺž rieky, plánovaná zástavba postavená nad ňou pre robotníkov závodu a samotný závod na rovine medzi vodou a železnicou.

The storyHistória

The village is medieval and unremarkable through its first six or seven centuries: a farming settlement on the Hron in the county of Tekov, whose earliest seat was at Starý Tekov a few kilometres downstream. Little survives above ground of the castle that gave the county its name.Dedina je stredoveká a prvých šesť či sedem storočí nijako výnimočná: roľnícka osada na Hrone v Tekovskej stolici, ktorej najstarším sídlom bol Starý Tekov pár kilometrov po prúde. Z hradu, ktorý dal stolici meno, sa nad zemou zachovalo len málo.

That changed in the 1950s, when the state picked the site for a heavy engineering plant: Slovenské energetické strojárne, the works that would build steam boilers and power-station equipment for the whole country. The village had the river for water, the railway for freight and flat ground to build on, and that was the whole of the reasoning.Zmenilo sa to v 50. rokoch, keď štát vybral toto miesto pre závod ťažkého strojárstva: Slovenské energetické strojárne mali stavať parné kotly a zariadenia pre elektrárne pre celú krajinu. Dedina mala rieku na vodu, železnicu na nákladnú dopravu a rovinu na stavanie — a to bola celá úvaha.

Flats, a school, a culture house and shops went up alongside the works, and Tlmače became a town on the strength of them. The boilers made here went into power stations across Czechoslovakia and were exported widely; for a generation this small place on the Hron was one of the addresses European power engineering knew.So závodom vyrástli byty, škola, kultúrny dom aj obchody a Tlmače sa vďaka nim stali mestom. Kotly odtiaľto putovali do elektrární po celom Československu a vyvážali sa do sveta; pre jednu generáciu bolo toto malé miesto na Hrone jednou z adries, ktoré európska energetika poznala.

What to seeČo vidieť

Tlmače are not a town of monuments, and it is more honest to say so than to dress the place up. What they do have is the Slovak Gate itself: the Hron running fast and clear between wooded slopes, marked paths onto the ridges on either side, and long views back down the valley over the lowland.Tlmače nie sú mestom pamiatok a je poctivejšie to povedať, než miesto prikrášľovať. Čo naozaj majú, je samotná Slovenská brána: Hron tečúci rýchlo a čisto medzi zalesnenými svahmi, značené chodníky na hrebene po oboch stranách a ďaleké výhľady dolinou späť na nížinu.

The socialist-era centre repays a slow look from anyone interested in how a planned industrial town was actually built — the layout, the culture house, the proportions of the housing blocks against the hills behind them.Centrum z čias socializmu stojí za pomalý pohľad každému, koho zaujíma, ako sa plánované priemyselné mesto naozaj stavalo — usporiadanie, kultúrny dom, proporcie bytoviek oproti kopcom za nimi.

The excursions are all a short drive away. Hronský Beňadik upstream has the great Gothic abbey church of the Benedictines, one of the most important medieval buildings in Slovakia; downstream lie Levice with its castle and the Tekov Museum, and the dwellings cut into the soft tuff at Brhlovce.Výlety sú všetky na krátku cestu autom. V Hronskom Beňadiku proti prúdu stojí veľký gotický kostol benediktínskeho opátstva, jedna z najvýznamnejších stredovekých stavieb na Slovensku; po prúde sú Levice s hradom a Tekovským múzeom a obydlia vytesané do mäkkého tufu v Brhlovciach.

Work and industryPráca a priemysel

Heavy engineering is still what the town does. The works is far smaller than at its peak and has been through restructuring more than once, but boiler and pressure-vessel fabrication, welding and steel construction remain the local trades, and the skills stayed in the town even as the order books thinned.Ťažké strojárstvo je stále tým, čím sa mesto živí. Závod je oveľa menší než vo svojom vrchole a viackrát prešiel reštrukturalizáciou, ale výroba kotlov a tlakových nádob, zváranie a oceľové konštrukcie zostali miestnymi remeslami a zručnosti v meste ostali aj vtedy, keď sa knihy objednávok stenčili.

The rest of the working population commutes: to Levice, to the Mochovce nuclear station west of it, and to the engineering and automotive plants around Nitra. Farming and forestry fill in the valley around the town.Zvyšok pracujúcich dochádza: do Levíc, do jadrovej elektrárne Mochovce západne od nich a do strojárskych a automobilových závodov okolo Nitry. Dolinu okolo mesta dopĺňa poľnohospodárstvo a lesníctvo.

Getting thereAko sa tam dostať

Tlmače are on the railway that runs up the Hron from Levice towards Kozárovce and Zvolen, and on the valley road that follows the same line; buses from Levice are frequent. By car the town is a short turn off the main road up the Hron valley.Tlmače ležia na železnici, ktorá ide popri Hrone z Levíc smerom na Kozárovce a Zvolen, a na cestnej trase, ktorá kopíruje tú istú líniu; autobusy z Levíc premávajú často. Autom je mesto krátkou odbočkou z hlavnej cesty údolím Hrona.
