In 1075 King Géza I founded a Benedictine abbey a few kilometres upstream at Hronský Beňadik, and its founding charter listed the estates and rights the new house was given. Tlmače is named in it, which makes the name one of the oldest recorded in this part of the kingdom. Historians argue about which parts of that charter are original and which were added by later copyists, so treat the year as the date of a document rather than the birthday of a village. People had been living on this bend of the river long before a monk wrote its name down.V roku 1075 založil kráľ Gejza I. pár kilometrov proti prúdu, v Hronskom Beňadiku, benediktínske opátstvo a jeho zakladacia listina vymenovala majetky a práva, ktoré nový kláštor dostal. Medzi menami sú aj Tlmače — patria tak k najstarším zapísaným miestnym názvom v tejto časti kráľovstva. Historici sa dodnes sporia, ktoré časti listiny sú pôvodné a ktoré dopísali neskorší odpisovači, takže ten rok berte ako dátum dokumentu, nie ako narodeniny dediny. Na tomto ohybe rieky žili ľudia dávno predtým, ako niekto jej meno zapísal.
