The Slovak Gate — the narrows where the Hron squeezes between the Pohronský Inovec and the Štiavnica hills — is the reason anything here ever mattered. Whoever held the gate held the route between the lowland and the mining towns of central Slovakia. Just downstream at Starý Tekov stood the old county castle that gave Tekov county its name; in 1321 the king moved the county's seat from there to Levice, and the castle above the ford disappeared so completely that almost nothing of it survives above ground. Kúsok po prúde v Starom Tekove stál starý stoličný hrad, podľa ktorého sa volá Tekovská stolica; v roku 1321 preniesol kráľ jej sídlo odtiaľ do Levíc a hrad nad brodom zanikol tak dôkladne, že nad zemou z neho takmer nič nezostalo. Tlmače zostali tým, čím boli vždy — roľníckou dedinou pri rieke, ktorá sa dívala, ako dolinou hore-dole putuje cudzia moc.
