After 1948 the refinery was nationalised along with everything else, and the state kept it running and put engineering and food-processing plants beside it. Šurany became a textbook socialist single-industry town: a secure job, a flat in a new block, a bus in from the villages every morning. The trade-off, which nobody could see at the time, was that the town had staked everything on one employer — and on one crop.Po roku 1948 cukrovar spolu so všetkým ostatným znárodnili, štát ho udržiaval v chode a pribudli k nemu strojárske a potravinárske podniky.
